A very in-vogue finish but also one of the most hated of DIY tasks - even the best decorators aren't always able to hang a complicated pattern or frieze. Getting the wall ready
Wallpaper shows every flaw in the surface beneath it, so most of the time on a papering job is spent before a single length goes up. Old paper is stripped back fully, the wall is filled and sanded flat, and bare or freshly skimmed plaster is sealed so the paste does not dry too quickly. On older, uneven London walls we will often recommend cross lining first: a plain lining paper hung horizontally gives an even base and a noticeably better finish.
How much paper to order
We measure up and tell you how many rolls are needed before you order. Patterned papers need more than plain ones because each length has to be matched to its neighbour, and a large pattern repeat can add a roll or two to a room. It is always worth ordering every roll from the same batch number, as shades vary slightly between print runs.
Where wallpaper works, and where it does not
- Feature walls, chimney breasts, bedrooms and dining rooms are ideal.
- In bathrooms and kitchens, choose a vinyl or a paper rated for humid rooms and keep it away from direct splashes.
- In rental properties we generally advise paint over paper: it is far quicker and cheaper to freshen between tenancies.
